The EvR hall

On the fourth floor of the museum is the charming room known as the Dr. Elie van Rijckevorsel Hall. Chesterfield couches, authentic temple doors, and paneling from a Thai ship give the space its cozy atmosphere and unique character. The room has a phenomenal view of the Erasmus Bridge. It also has an interactive whiteboard. The Dr. Elie van Rijckevorsel Hall is suitable for meetings, dinners and receptions for up to 80 persons. The Erasmus Foundation has helped to furnish this hall.

Dr Elie van Rijckevorsel

Dr. Elie van Rijckevorsel (Rotterdam, 1845-1928) was a scientist who devoted his life to serving society. This ran in the family. Both his father and his grandfather were administrators who played leading roles in developing the city of Rotterdam.

As a physicist, Van Rijckevorsel travelled to the far corners of the world. He spent time in the Dutch East Indies-now Indonesia, and in Brazil and South Africa. His focus in physics was the earth's magnetism, but he was also interested in collecting artifacts, both artistic and ethnographic. During his stays abroad he also put together an ethnological collection.

Elie van Rijckevorsel was an important patron of Wereldmuseum. He bequeathed more than 900 objects to the museum, including a major collection of Javanese batik, weapons, headdresses, jewellery and shields.
