The power of silver

"The power of silver" is an exhibition of the Smith-Hutschenruyter collection: nearly 600 extraordinary pieces of ethnic silver jewellery coming from a vast area that stretches from Morocco to China. The collection is a recent gift, which the museum is showing to its public for the first time on this scale.

Every piece of jewellery tells its own powerful story: a story of dazzling beauty, refined craftsmanship, great economic value in terms of weight and silver content, or belief in magical, spiritual forces capable of assisting people in their daily lives. The bracelets, belts, necklaces, head ornaments and anklets evoke admiration both for their beauty and for the high standard of craftsmanship with which they were made.

The jewellery has been collected over a period of more than thirty years by Maudy Smith and Jaap Heij. The husband and wife team specifically prefers silver because this material, more than most, acquires a sheen from being worn. Silver is thus the ultimate symbol for interaction and dialogue between a piece of jewellery and its wearer. The people who live in the countries where the jewellery came from, however, are increasingly turning to gold jewellery. As a result, the silver jewellery that has traditionally been so highly valued is threatened with becoming more and more scarce.

"The power of silver" is an impressive, aesthetically pleasing exhibition with highlights from various regions. North Africa, the Middle East and Asia are the focal areas. Magic, protection, religion, fertility, capital and emancipation are the themes that are further explored.
