Elie van Rijckevorsel and the Wereldmuseum, 1874-1884

Elie van Rijckevorsel (1845-1928) was a scientist, traveller, explorer, collector of art and ethnographic artifacts, and a Rotterdammer. He directed his energy in many ways to the city of Rotterdam and its cultural heritage.

Van Rijckevorsel helped to found the Wereldmuseum, for example, known at the time as the Museum voor Land- en Volkenkunde. He also helped to set up the Erasmusstichting, an organisation for the promotion of art, education and science in Rotterdam. The Erasmusstichting is 100 years old, the Wereldmuseum 125 years old. The celebration of these two anniversaries provides a good opportunity to shine a spotlight on the eminent Rotterdammer Elie van Rijckevorsel. Two display cases in the exhibition The Collection contain objects which he brought back from Indonesia and Brazil. The exhibition 125 Masterpieces also features several objects from the Van Rijckevorsel collection.
